Earth Science and Art worked together on a Project Based Learning adventure through the Natural Earth Wonders. Science class worked in groups of 3 to 4 researching a Natural Earth Wonder of their choice. Choices were: Mariana's Trench in western Pacific Ocean, Fuego Volcano in Gautemala, Mt. Everest in Asia, Galapagos Islands in Pacific Ocean, Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, and Stonehenge in England. Science students also explored raw minerals with plaster and water to make colored chalk for chalk mural panels. They presented all information to our art class. New groups of 4-5 scientists and artists were formed to work on chalk murals. Artists began researching images of chosen area and developed sketches to present to scientists for TAG critique. After viewing comments, revisions were made, Math teacher was brought in to teach scale drawing for correct proportions when enlarging. Artists created grid on backs of smaller drawings, numbered, and cut. Enlarged grids were placed on 4x8 panels. Placing each small cut grid box into appropriate larger grid box on panel, assisted with collaborating on drawing portion of project. Success was achieved and we now have Natural Earth Wonders displayed throughout our school. We also have 2 simulated game design students working on a website that will provide information on earth wonder and the creative process for chalk panels. QR codes will be displayed with panels to educate viewers. Artists and Scientists working together to inform and educate others.
When we were working with Spanish III class on a PBL project, Creating Social Awareness Through Art, I immediately thought of Tonia, The Barefoot Artist. Tonia and I were in art classes together throughout high school and I've always thought she was so creative and talented in art. I also keep in touch with Tonia on Facebook and I've been able to follow her career as a mural artist. I knew she was the perfect artist to come and inspire our students in their PBL mural project. We were very fortunate to have Tonia come to our school and give a presentation with some of her original artworks as well as slideshow of her murals. Tonia also worked with our students walking around and giving advice on their individual pieces. We all learned so much from Tonia and appreciate all her ideas and suggestions for our collaboration project. It was Tonia to suggest our mural come together in a 3-D installation. Thank you Tonia, it turned out amazing!!!

The Creative Process
Spanish and Visual Arts collaborated on a Project Based Learning experience in the study of Hispanic traditional Arts. Students worked together to choose an Hispanic country, research information about the country and its artifacts, create a presentation using choice of format, and also use inspiration from the cultural arts to create recreate an art product representing their Hispanic country. Their hard work paid off and showed when they presented at a breakfast reception for parents, teachers, and fellow students.
